Protected Areas of Mexico

Mexican Protected Natural Areas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mexico's Protected Natural Areas are 158 designated "Natural Areas" in Mexico, representing 11% of the nation's surface area, and are protected and administrated by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, or CONANP), a federal agency.

In Mexico there are various types of protected areas: federal, state, municipal, community, ejido and private.  Among the most well known are the National Park Desert of Los Leones and the Biosphere Reserve of the Monarch Butterfly. Their areas range from 84 hectares in the Chamela Bay Island sanctuary, Jalisco, to 2,493,091 ha in the Biosphere Reserve El Vizcaino, in Southern Baja California. Of the 166 protected areas, 58 are part of the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP) for bringing together those protected areas with biodiversity and ecological characteristics of particular relevance to the country.
